Note: Court case records are governed by court rules rather than the Public Records Act under RCW 42.56, per state case law including Nast v. Michels.

Public Records Act Requests

Spokane County runs an online Public Records Center at spokanecounty.org. Requests may also come in by letter, fax, email, or in person. A request should include the requester's name, address, contact info, a clear record description, and the date and time of the request. The public records officer confirms receipt in writing and then tracks the file through to release or denial.

The Public Records Officer is at 1116 West Broadway Ave, Spokane, WA 99260, phone 509-477-1721, email SpoCoPRR@SpokaneCounty.org. The county does not accept requests by social media or voicemail. Bot requests are limited. Agencies reply within five business days per RCW 42.56.520, either with the records, an estimate, a clarifying question, or a denial with a reason.

See the Spokane County Public Records Policy for the full procedure. The policy spells out how bot requests are flagged and how large requests can be handled in installments to avoid overloading staff.

Spokane County Auditor's Office

The Auditor's Office covers Recording, Financial Services, Motor Vehicle Licensing, and Elections. It records and keeps all public documents required by law. The office also runs all county elections under state law. As Custodian of Records, the Auditor keeps the official index of real property documents. The Auditor and deputy auditors are not attorneys and do not give legal advice. Document preparation is the responsibility of the person who files the paper.

The Auditor homepage links to every division.

Birth and death records from 1890 to 1907 were filed with Spokane County. Copies of those come from the Washington State Digital Archives, not the county office. That is a common twist for genealogy users doing a Spokane County people search for older ancestors. Modern vital records go through the Spokane Regional Health District and the Washington Department of Health.

Search Tips

When you search the recorded document index, uncheck "All Types" if you want to narrow to a specific kind of filing. Names go in last, first format. Use a space between multiple values. Use a colon to set a date range. Documents after March 24, 2026 may contain errors or omissions, per the portal's own disclaimer.

For name searches, try variants. People change spellings and sometimes use middle initials. Maiden names also matter for older marriage and property records. A thorough Spokane County people search should check more than one spelling before you give up.

  • Use full name first, then a broad name range
  • Check both grantor and grantee fields
  • Look for maiden names on older deeds
  • Try parcel number if you know the property
  • Search the legal description for surveys and plats

Note: The Auditor limits some online document images to protect personal identifiers such as Social Security numbers.

Copy Requests and Fees

Copies of recorded documents can be bought in person at the Recording Division on the first floor of the County Courthouse. You can also order by mail. Write to Spokane County Auditor, ATTN: Recording, PO Box 2353, Spokane, WA 99210-2353. Include the document number, a return address, and a check payable to Spokane County Auditor. Phone orders through the Recording Department are accepted at 509-477-2270.

Certified copies add $2.00 per document on top of the per page fee. Those are what you need for legal filings and some name change requests. Non-certified copies work for most casual lookups. The Spokane County Court Viewer also shows Superior Court case documents online through the county site.

District and Municipal Courts

Spokane District Court and city municipal courts handle misdemeanors and traffic. Those files do not show up in the Superior Court portal. You may need to call the specific court for a case by a party name. A full Spokane County people search should cross-check both levels of court when needed. Some district court hits do show up in the statewide Washington Courts case search, which covers courts of limited jurisdiction.

Cities in Spokane County
